Founders & Editorial Team

Founded in 2011 by a team member then serving in France's Gendarmerie — a military police force — after finding no dating site built for men in uniform. Profiled internationally from day one.

The history of GayCharlie

In 2011, one of GayCharlie's founding team members was serving in France's Gendarmerie — a national police force with military status — and found nowhere serious for gay men in uniform to meet. There was no dating site built for military, police, or fire service members, or for the people drawn to them. Rather than a market study, GayCharlie.com came out of that lived gap. That same year, the US officially ended "Don't Ask, Don't Tell," letting service members serve openly for the first time.

The name isn't random. "Charlie" is the letter C in the NATO phonetic alphabet — a direct nod to the military world that's been at the heart of the site since day one.

From launch, GayCharlie chose specialization over going generalist: a space built specifically for men in uniform and the people who admire them, rather than one category lost among thousands of unrelated profiles.

Over the years, the community has naturally grown beyond that original core — military, police, and fire service — to recognize more than a dozen other uniformed professions: pilots, sailors, nurses, doctors, mechanics, security guards, flight attendants, delivery drivers, train conductors, PE teachers, locksmiths, and more. GayCharlie covers that real diversity today, without ever losing the focus that's defined it since 2011.

A promise the GayCharlie team keeps every day.

GayCharlie in the media

From launch, GayCharlie drew attention from specialist press on both sides of the Atlantic.

Profiled the site as a dedicated dating platform for gay men with a connection to the military, at a time when nothing comparable existed.

Têtu.com — founder interview, January 2011

A feature on hyper-specialized gay dating sites — bears, daddies, military — named GayCharlie among the pioneers of the category.

Têtu, print edition #170, "Love 2.0," October 2011

"GayCharlie.com is the number 1 site for gays wishing to meet single army men."

Q Magazine, Australia, Midsumma 2011
